1860's $10 DIX note, Citizen's Bank of Louisiana New Orleans |
PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ | Over the years we have seen a few of the famous "Dix" notes, but none as nice as this example! Legend has it that the riverboat men came down the Mississippi and encountered these notes printed in both English and French with the prominent "Dix" (French for ten) and these notes became known as Dixies. The country north of New Orleans became known as the land of the Dixies and later simply "Dixie Land". Voted note number 86 in the Bowers and Sundman book, "The 100 Greatest American Currency Notes", this note has been given the PMG distinction of Exceptional Paper Quality. |

1896 $1 Silver Certificate S/N 438462 |
CGA Choice Uncirculated 64 | Fr. 224. Tillman/Morgan. S/N 438462. Rated number seven in the Bowers/Sundman book "100 Greatest American Currency Notes", the 1896 Education $1 is always a crown pleaser in numismatic circles! Along with its counterparts the $2 and $5 of the same series, the "Educational" issues are considered by most to be the most beautiful of American produced currency. The $1 depicts "History Instructing Youth", with the goddes and her pupil positioned approximately where the Robert E. Lee mansion is, across the Potomac from Washington, DC. A true masterpiece! |
